Why You (Yes, You) Should Write for Noise

Noise needs new volunteers to continue. Here’s how you can help out.

Why You (Yes, You) Should Write for Noise

Since its founding in 2024, Noise has been a rapidly moving vehicle for university news and student voices. We’ve published over 100 articles, on topics ranging from collapsing clubs, student politics, April Fool’s fanfiction, and much much more. Our fight for independent student journalism has seen us featured in the Sydney Morning Herald, and won us the ‘Most Rebellious’ award at the 2024 Australian Student Journalism Conference. Along the way, we’ve always done our best to shine a light on issues relevant to UNSW students, building towards a more engaged and informed student body.

Now, we want you to be a part of that. And if Noise is going to survive as a long-term part of UNSW’s student life and culture, we need you to be a part of that.

Do you have an issue that’s important to you, that you wish people were better informed about? Is there something going on at UNSW that you think needs to be better explored? Do you have an interest you want to write about? Or are you just curious to see how a student paper functions and are invested in keeping our doors open?

Noise has always been managed by a small team of dedicated students who have poured an immense amount of effort into the project, because of their belief in the value of independent and current student journalism. But as time marches on, and more of those students graduate, it becomes imperative that new students join our team, with new voices and fresh perspectives.

If you have any interest in writing for us, either in the form of a singular article on an issue that’s important to you, or as an ongoing member of our team, please reach out to us. There is a form available on our website, or you can just message our Instagram account.

We’re particularly interested in immediate news, features pieces, opinion journalism, and reviews; but will consider any pitches put forward. The main requirement is that your proposed work be of some relevance or interest to UNSW students.

This callout isn’t exclusively for students in humanities degrees – indeed, at least half of our team are STEM students. Our editors are able to aid new writers crafting their articles; so even if you’ve never written in this format before, that shouldn’t be a deterrent. All that matters is that you’re passionate about what you’re writing about.

In this rapidly moving world, we’re excited about the future of Noise. And we hope that you’re a part of that future.
