The Future of Noise

An update on the state of UNSW’s independent student publication.

The Future of Noise

Noise has been around for two and a half years now—almost as long as a typical bachelor's degree. And it’s been a wild ride. Dozens of UNSW students have contributed to Noise, creating well over a hundred articles reporting on a huge range of issues impacting university students.

We started out in 2024 as a platform for student news that wasn’t beholden to Arc or UNSW, and we are incredibly proud of the way this publication has grown since then, and grateful to every contributor, reader, and supporter who has made it possible.

But now, Noise is facing a challenge. And if the publication is going to continue into 2027, we need more people who care about our work to get involved.

Since its inception, Noise has relied solely on the efforts of students to produce its articles. Everything you see on the Noise website and Instagram page is the result of a small team of passionate student journalists volunteering their time for something they believe in.

Almost everyone involved in the initial creation of the Noise project has graduated, and the current leadership will step aside at the end of the year. Noise’s editors will begin the process of choosing new leaders and deciding the publication’s future towards the end of October. So if this is something you would like to have a say in, there is still time to get involved!

The bottom line is, there is a reasonable chance that Noise will not have enough contributors to continue into 2027. We hope that isn’t the case. We believe in this project and hope it has many years left in it.

So if you are interested in writing for Noise, either on an ongoing basis or because you have a specific article you want to develop, now is the time to reach out! You can use the form on our website, or you can always message us on Instagram.

Writing for Noise is a great way to hone your skills as a writer, learn more about the university, and meet new friends (we promise we’re very cool).

Whatever happens, we will continue to write and publish articles for the remainder of 2026. Expect some articles about the upcoming UNSW SRC election, and other important stories that will undoubtedly emerge as the term progresses.

We look forward to publishing more independent student journalism, and hope to see the publication continue in new hands next year.
