Ben Cohen, a 20-year-old CSE student at UTS, was falsely named as the Bondi Junction stabber by 7 News the day after the event occurred. Later that day NSW Police confirmed the true identity of the perpetrator as 40-year-old Queensland man Joel Cauchi, prompting 7 News to retract their statement and apologise privately to the family, publicly stating “the mistake was human error and has been rectified.”

In the days following, Ben Cohen enlisted two of Australia’s highest-profile defamation lawyers, Patrick Giles and Sue Crysanthou of George Giles as his solicitor and barrister to seek damages on his behalf.

It has been confirmed this week that both parties have reached a settlement over the matter, the terms of which are confidential.

7 News did not put out an article on this dispute despite its other newsroom counterparts such as 9 News, the ABC, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian and many more doing so.
